Second chances. The only connection I have with the prison system is my own personal attitude to incarceration. It is undoubted that some people must be inside for the protection of others, but what has aways concerned me has been the amount of people placed away in darkened holes for decades for crimes of non-violence, and such people, to me, pose no threat to society in general and as a result, I have always found myself sympathetic to them. I also can't stand how people are so stigmatised once they do get released from prison, thus making it twice as hard for them to rehabilitate and become decent, hard working society members. Whole families are forced to do the time, not just the inmates, as a result many families break up, children have to do without fathers or mothers and the inmate him/herself is now starting freedom from the worst possible position and often ends up back inside. I can only imagine the sense of loneliness and isolation such people have had to endure and, as a human being, that offends me. So yes, I would be happy to communicate with an inmate (female) or someone who is due for release or recently been released.
